2 people wearing white lab coats simultaneously working at a sterile workbench.

“I just need to do a quick medium change. Don’t worry, I won’t need much space!” 😁👉

What would you do in this situation? Exactly. Say no. ❌🛑

But can it harm to share the hood with someone else for a short time 👀? Yes, it can. 🫵

There is an increased risk of cross-contamination 👎👎👎, the worst type of contamination in the cell culture lab.

This can happen through

👉 Aerosol formation while working. Remember, even the best pipetting practices will generate at least small amounts of aerosols.

👉 Accidental (or habitual!) splashing of the medium during work.

👉 Sharing the same waste.

All these are bad practices and have no place in a cell culture lab. Plus, your concentration is lost, when you have to adjust to a second person working in the same hood 😵‍.

And by the way, this person obviously has no plan – otherwise they would not need to ask you for a spot in the laminar hood, while you are working 🤷🏻‍♀️.

So, just say no to the person, who wants to sneak into your well-structured laminar hood and disturb your work. If you’re uncomfortable saying no, say: “Yes, sure, when I am done. Then you’ll have the whole hood for yourself!”

Believe me, it helps 😊! (Still, turn on the UV lamp when you’re done 👍!)
